Re: 5R55E Trans Delayed Engage 97 AStar by Phil Feinstein
Post New Message Hey JD!

A little trivia for you: The first model year for the Windstar was 96 1/2 or March of 1996. Despite plans of cancelling the Aerostar for the 1997 model year, production continued into the early 1998 model year (9/1997). You've definitely got one of the later ones.

I haven't seen a 1998 1/2 Aerostar, so I'm thinking the '98 run was very limited (1 to 3 months). Just enough to use up all the spare parts. The Windstar was designed to replace the Aerostar, but I still miss a RWD minivan (With a 4WD option!). Of the Trinity (Ranger, Explorer, Aerostar) the Aerostar was (in my opinion) the hardest one to work on. Same driveline, no access.

That silver tag ID's the trans and gives you specifics on when it was built. This is different from the "Orange tag". 97GT is the date stamp for the build, and there's another code that tells you where it was built. Usefull for the warantee stuff, but not much help in the day-to-day (unless you *really* like trivia).

If you ever run out of stuff to do on that '83 super duty, let me know and I'll help you with the 4WD conversion on your Aerostar!
