Re: 5R55E Trans Delayed Engage 97 AStar by Phil Feinstein
Post New Message These TSBs were released after I stopped working at a Ford dealer, so I haven't done them. A new plate for the valve body sounds reasonable since fliud flow and line pressure dictate how fast a gear engages or disengages. The O/D drum speed sensor is part of the circuit for the lock up on the torque converter. Torque converter problems are not shy, especially with lock up. This would not cause what you are experiancing. The new direct clutch plates would only apply to re-builds. Ford isn't going to pay for a re-build just for new style plates (or "Steels"). Orange tag usually means that this is a first run, so no rebuilding. Straight R&R for the engineers to look at. This was the same TSB for the SHO Taurus with the new electronic trans (call this number and the men in black will pick up your old trans and give you a new one to use).

With EEC5, all the codes run thru the main computer. If you have an OBD2 scanner you will be able to see these. Trans codes have been traditionally thru the fuel computer. The E4OD and the AXEOD use solinoids for some of the valve body controls. Sounds like your tranny is built the same way and a bad solinoid will cause a delay in shifting. If this was the case, however, I'd expect the check engine light to be on. That makes the valve body plate update the most likely candidate for what you need done. Since this is an update (TSB not a recall), you'll be paying for this. Cost would be minimal compared to a re-build. As for a computer update, if this isn't a recall, you'll pay for that as well. The TSB should outline what computers need to be updated or left alone and how to test.

Hope that helps!
