This is in a 1997 Aerostar 4.0 2WD, 52,000 miles, clean fluid. First year for 5R55E. This one is slow to engage when placed in Low or Drive position from any other position P,N,R,2). There is also a delay getting back into First Gear when stopping. This can result in catching the transmission in neutral when trying to go again just before a complete stop. Shops seem to have limited experience with this transmission and most just want to do a complete rebuild. Just found a shop that wants to install a "bypass plate" in the valve body to redirect the fluid. Does that make sense?
In AllData, from BAT, found a few TSB titles. 98-5-14 Hissing Sound at Idle (has that too), 98-1-12 New Center Support, 97-15-26 DELAYED ENGAGEMENT/Busy Shifting, 97-15-27 New Direct Clutch Steel Plates, 97-15-28 O/D Drum Speed Sensor Deleted, and 96185 Orange Tag (???) Service Procedure. By TSB dates and having had a chance to review original owner service records, none of these TSBs would have been built into this vehicle or applied by the dealer. Van has done this since we bought it with 35,000 miles.
I got a reply that said I need to get it to a dealer and have check and see if it needs a computer update. That is what TSB 97-15-26 is referring to. And have them read out the trans computer for any problems. Will not a regular OBD2 scanner read those?
Has anybody worked with this transmission, this problem, any of these TSBs? Especially the "Plate" and 97-15-26! I really don't want to give somebody a License to Guess!
