2991 Ford Ranger 4X4 Dave 11-25-08
Like the others, when I turn my 4x4 switch, nothing happens. No light in the dash and definately not the 4 wheel engaging. I see several people have had this problem in here, I hope somebody can point me in the right direction. My truck has 96,000 miles and is an automatic. It has the 4.0 engine and automatic tranny. It truck has always gone into 4x4 with no problem and even this fall, but now that I could use it, nothing. Any advice wopuld be greatly appreciated.

I'm assuming that you have a 1991 Ranger and not a 2991 Ranger, otherwise I'd appreciate some stock tips ;-)

You truck has a controller for the 4WD behind the driver's seat. It has a test button and if it tests OK, then you may have a switch problem or a problem with the electric motor that shifts the transfer case. It is very common for the shift motor to fail without warning and when it seizes, it can blow the fuse for it under the hood. Unfortunately, there is a lot of info on how the 4WD works and how to use it in the owner's manual but there is no test procedure for any part of it.

Hope that helps!
