Onan generator won't stay running Richard 11-13-08
I have an onan generator on my 1990 Bounder motorhome. Generator worked fine in August and a month later generator will run as long as start button is pressed, as soon as you let go of button generator stops running.
I have tried a new fuel filter, changed spark plugs and filled motorhome with fuel and changed oil. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks. Richard

Make sure the chip board and everything around it are bolted/screwed down and not loose. This happened with my son's generator and he was telling me he went to take out the chip/computer board and found things were not properly bolted down and had come loose. Include all ignition parts in the inspection.

Other issues can be 1) battery voltage below 9V check batteries and all connections; processor will abort start at less than 6V cranking power 2) disconnect genset control connnector and insure integrity of pins and connection 3)check fuel lines for damage/no cracks allowed

Check fault codes: control switch on the genset will blink if fault shutwown. It will blink 3 or 4 times repeatly. Three blinks is a service fault; press STOP once to cause a two-digit second level fault code to blink; the tow digit code consists of 1, 2, 3 or 4 blinks, a brief pause, and the 1 to 9 blinks; example is fault dode 24 consists of blink-blink...pause...blink-blink-blink-blink. Fault codes stop blink after 5 minutes. To clear codes press stop once for level 1 fault or twice for level 2 code fault. Press stop three times within five seconds to restore blinking.
This came from the service manual'
Once get fault code list on web and ask what that fault code means.
Good luck.

Have your govenor overspeed adjustment checked. I had similiar problem and the Onan technician adjusted the overspeed on the carb - problem solved.

Thanks for all the help, but still have the same problem. Changed oil again, replaced fuel line and filter, changed plugs, motor home is full of fuel. Not sure of how to check fault codes because the generator does not have any lights on genset board. Checked the overspeed on the carb. Is there anything besides the control panel to buy or is there another part you think I need. Thanks alot.
Richard
