Trailer roof cleaning tommy 10-31-08
We have just recently bought a travel trailer which has been in storage in a barn for three years,im told it has a metal roof but im not sure it has.
there is no roof access ladder on the trailer can i lean a regular ladder to the side and get up to check the a/c and vents im told with a metal roof its not advisable to go up as you can cause the roof to leak, what should i do to avoid damage,i imageing its pretty dirty on top as the barn is anything but clean what can i use to clean the roof.
this is our first trailer and know little about anything connected with trailers

No guarantees but--
How old is it? Has there been any roof leaks yet? If it is not really old and no leaks (therefore no chance of rot under the leak you might want to try this (I have and it was fine)-

If you have to go up there, consider using 2 pieces of 3/4 inch plywood. about 2 feet wide by 3 feet (this evens out your weight on the roof and will make it less likely your foot will damage it as the piece of plywood evenly distributes the force of your knee). How heavy are you? (Your weight and the age of the trailer, and if there have been any roof leaks, help determine if you should do it. If you are large, do you have any light friends that would go up there for you?

Slide both pieces of ply on the top of the roof from the ladder. Crawl on your knees on one to another, then put the first in front of you. Keep doing this to go around the roof.

When you go, bring a broom and also a can of the rubber seam paint (and brush) and clean the debris and then re-paint the seams (you have to be sure it is clean first though). I have duct taped a brush to the end of a broom handle to extend my reach. When you are up there you should be able to see where the seams are. Also, you can paint the center of the seams while up there and use the brush on the broom handle (while on a ladder) for the outsides of the seams.

Again NO Guarantees but my 2 cents.

Good luck!
