1965 Ford Mustang John 10-31-08
I recently moved from AZ to VA. My Mustang has started doing something very strange. When the car starts all is ok then steam comes puring out from the defrost vents. This stays constant until the day warms up. It will fog up the entire window even when the engine is fully warm is still blows steam on the front window. Any suggestions on the problem?

Coolant leak from the heater core. I am not familiar with the mustang but usually a leak from a clamp or hose cant get into the cabin of the car but it is possible. Good Luck

Hello John,

I also have a 1965 Mustang (which I bought new). Bubba has the answer. Note that the heater hoses do connect to the heater core inside the car, between the firewall and the heater box. The hoses and clamps could cause a leak; however, the leak would be outside the heater box and could wet the floormat but not inside the box where it could cause the fogging of the windshield.

If you decide to do the repair yourself, be carefull removing the hoses from the heater or you may cause additional problems with the heater core. Consider cutting the hoses and replacing them when reinstalling the heater.

Keep the old Mustangs rolling,
John

It sounds like you need a new heater core.
Re: 1965 Ford Mustang Steve 11-6-08
I've been restoring vintage Mustangs since 1980. The model you are refering to has the heater core crossed with the defrost ducts, thus providing dry heat to the windshield to defrost. A leak in the heater core will cause the problem you described. The steam emitted from the heater core will pass thru the ducts to the windshield. You MAY OR MAY NOT have water on the floorboard! A leaking hose WILL NOT be the aswer! As Dana Cusic said, "it sounds like you need a new heater core". TRUST ME!!!
