The crankshaft seal in our Onan generator has failed, resulting in an oil leak. The repair shop (Mike Thompson's RV) claims the seal failed because of a scratch on the crankshaft and that repairs should be covered by our extended maintenance contract (we have a contract with Western General). Western General has denied the claim, stating that the spring in the seal caused the damage to the crankshaft. Their position is that since the damage to the crankshaft (a covered part) was caused by the failure of a non-covered part (the seal), thus the denial. Question: is it possible/likely that the damage to the crank was caused by the seal failing? Your thoughts and comments are appreciated. Thank you.

I deal with this kind of problem all the time. The shop you went to dose not care who is paying them so thay will not work hard to get you covered. First of all any person that works on engines will know that a rubber seal even spring renforced will not damaged a harden steel crank shaft. The warrent company call center person gets paid a bonus for not paying clames. You as the customer will have better luck getting the claim paid. Hope this helps.
