97 Ford Escort, broke down, codes P1443 and P0301 Quentin 10-7-08
The Service Engine Soon light had been on for a few months and I never got it checked out. The vehicle was running fine and I had no money to fix it so I just assumed it was a bad sensor. (yah I know)

One day last week while driving my vehicle started it making a strange clicking noise and then the Service Engine Soon light started to blink on and off. I went to pull over and got into a left hand turn lane and the vehicle died. I was able to get it started by giving it gas while turning the key. I had to keep my foot on the gas to keep it running and it was running very rough. I pulled it directly into a parking lot and it died again.

My father says it sounds like it is having spark ignition problems but we checked the timing belt and it seems fine. We hooked a reader up to the vehicle and it gave the trouble codes, P1443 which I guess is the EVAP canister purge valve, and P0301, a misfire in cylinder 1.

My question is could the purge valve cause this type of problem and make my vehicle stop or is there another problem that could have been caused by me not fixing the purge valve when it was malfunctioning? Could there be an all together different problem that has nothing to do with the trouble codes?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P1443: Evaporative Emission Control System Control Valve
P0301: Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected

With OBD2 (EEC5) when the "Check engine" light flashes, that means the computer has detected a loss of efficiency across the catalytic converters. You could have a few problems.

The first code may be why your check engine light has been on, but the second code is a symptom, not a cause. An ignition timing problem would set a code, so the misfire isn't an ignition problem.

Here's what I suspect right off the bat: You have a collapsed evap canister or a clog in one of the evap lines and running rich has caused the secondary catalytic converter to start collapsing.

A blockage in the primary or secondary cat should set a code of P04xx. The thing of it is, the check engine light is only supposed to blink when there's a cat problem.

That "Strange clicking noise" bothers me. That could indicate a problem with the hydraulic lash adjuster. It's possible that both your cats are fine and you have a mechanical issue with the top end of the engine. You'd be doing yourself a favor if you'd run a compression check on all 4 cylinders and see if cylinder 1 is doing something screwy.

Hope that helps!
