My engine dies when i turn on my headlights...Any ideas of what this might be...Thanks in advance for any input...
Re: STRANGE BUBBA THE BUS TECH 8-15-08
Do you boost your unit to start it? If so you have a charging/stating system problem that could be caused by, bad conection in charging, battery, system including bad ground conections. It could be that for some reason the battery is disconected when the engine is running. The alternator is not charging and the battery voltage dropps below what the ignition/fuel injection needs to run the engine when the head lights are turned on. From there We go back to bad ground conection that causes the ignition/fuel ijection to cut out due to the ground path through the head/marker tail lights being cut off. (have seen this). Start by measureing the battery voltage running and shut off. Good Luck

Could you give a bit more information....such as vehicle type, year, make and model?
Re: STRANGE Eric 8-15-08
It is a 1983 winnebago chieftan 33 foot motorhome. i need to know why this thing is doing that. if i dont turn my lights on it runs fine and i can drive it all over the place. but if it rains i have to pull over untill it stops. i can run my windshield wipers. but no headlights. if i do the motor just dies, quicks and i have to jump it off to restart it again. any frigging idea of what to do with this pile of crap. i feel like driving it off a bridge.

You probably have a BAD Switch.
Also, if the hedlight DIMMER switch is on the floor, REPLACE IT. They get all kinds of crud in em' and can reek
havock on all kind of things. Try that.
GOOOOOOOOD LUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
Re: STRANGE mark semeraro 8-16-08
I am not a mechanic and others here are probably more qualified than I. I just know a little about electrical vehicle issues through hard knocks.

I would seriously suspect a short in the wireing somewhere. Have you ever had to replace a fuse? Are all the fuses in it the amount of amps they should be? did someone replace one that kept blowing with a higher amount one?

I would start it up, pull out one headlight bulb and see if it dies when you turn on the lights, if not try the other.

Look for chafed wires in the harness. Did it just start this? Is the vehicle new to you (bought used?). Does everything go dead? How about lights on when it is not running? What happens then? It certainly could also be the voltage issue another person wrote about too. What is the voltage of the battery while it is not running? Do the signals blink slowy when the brake lights are on and it is not running? All of these kind of signs can help you figure it out.

I would start by looking for chaffed wires myself. Is there wiring near the exhaust manifold, or hot exhaust system that could be shorting?

Good luck- electrical problems can be challenging.

I had experience with that problem over the years once it was floor dimmer switch, one time it was bad alternator.
