Have 4.0 bfa onan genset in 86 crossman, sparkplug is getting fire. it has an inline fuel filter looks like 2 wires coming out of it, is this a fuel heater and can it be temporarily bypassed?

I think what you have is an electric fuel pump. It should come on when you hit the start button.

I do not have 12 volts to the coil but three prongs at the relay have power before i hit the starter button.

Hi Jack
Yes the thing with the two wires is an electric fule pump, most likley a Carter. Take the fule line off at the carb or at the pump. Hit the start button and see if gas comes out with the start switch engaged, if not the pump is bad even if it makes a noise.
Tip !! I replaced my pump on the same gen, you have with a universial electric fule pump bought at Auto Zone for $38.00. It works great and looks almost like the Carter. Get the one LOW PRESSURE 2.5 lbs to 4.0 lbs. Be sure to also change the filter. If you buy an Onan pump its around $85.00 no need to this pump works great at half the price. If you don't have and Auto Zone arounfd you most any auto parts store has these pumps just make sure it is a low pressure pump between 2.5 to 4 or 5 lbs. They also have selectable pressure electric fule pumps. These will work also just keep the pressure set low again to around 3 or 4 LBS
