AC fan sticks...I've taken the cover off and given it a spin and it will then run. It worked the next couple of times when I would turn it off and back on again, but that was the same evening. I waited another day and once again it wouldn't come on without me taking the cover off and spinning it by hand to get it kick started. Any suggestions? I've heard this is not a new issue. There is nothing noticable that is obstructing the fan from moving. My guess is the rod needs to be lubed or something...thought I'd better ask around before trying a random product though. Appreciate any advice out there.
My fan stopped working and I could hear the compressor starting. Removed the shroud and found the fan blades contacting the shroud. The support from the bottom pan of the A/C up to the fan end of the motor was bent. Straightened the support and all was well and has remained so. Have no idea how the support got bent, never had a problem or heard the fan hitting the shroud before the time it wouldn't work at all. Circulating blower and condenser fan are shaft driven from opposite ends of the motor.
Hey John..thanks for the info. The fan on mine hasn't been making contact with anything when it's running...it's just a little stiff so it requires a twist of the hand to get it going. Quite inconvenient on a hot summer day.
I think that I would lubricate the shaft with oil at each end of the fan motor and see if some could find its way into the bushings/bearings. If there is a place for oiling, I would oil there (sometimes there are small slits which have the bottom formed outward for oiling). The motor would be mounted with those up from the shaft. When you apply power to the motor and it doesn't start, can you hear anything at the motor? You say it is "stiff" and chances are lubrication will work.
Having trouble w/fan squirrel cage,not turning when turning on rv air conditioner. I have changed capacitor, but still the same thing. I have to phyically turn cage by hand, and then its alright for the rest of camping trip, till the next trip,then have to turn by hand again. Please advise, steve
Check the brand on the fan motor. If it is A O Smith brand, the motor is bad. They made a bunch that would not self start. Only real solution is to replace the motor. Contact the manufacturer of the AC and see if any warranty help is available. They know about the problem. WH
