Kearney, Nebraska — An experience summer travelers do not want to miss.

The Archway Monument, just off of Interstate 80 at Kearney, Neb. exit 272 welcomes travelers to an adventure that transports them back in time—to an era when covered wagons, hand-pulled carts, and trains first crossed the prairies. The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument is an interactive adventure that pays tribute to the pioneers who passed through central Nebraska on their way West. These entrepreneurs were shaped by what they saw and experienced and they have given America a heritage that is a living spirit that molds our nation’s character today.

Travelers witness the thrills of news coming into a distant outpost, a buffalo stampede, the words and faces of those that lived and died on the route, the building of the railroad, the creation of the first transcontinental road (the Lincoln Highway) and today’s modern transportation system that still brings adventurers—like you!

The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument is a bridge that pays tribute to the perseverance and ingenuity that developed our wonderfully diverse culture and dynamic American heritage and future. It has wonderful educational programs for children of all ages, outstanding food service and a premier gift store that offers a variety of Nebraska-made products and a selection of items that will appeal to all.

The staff, dressed in authentic clothing of the period, welcomes travelers with smiles and a warm "howdy." Come begin a pioneering experience today!

The exhibit, spanning 160 years of American history and patriotism, lasts approximately one hour. The scenic drive to the monument winds past small lakes and teepees and features picnic and hiking areas to extend the experience.

Since opening on June 9, 2000, The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument has received many awards and honors.

  • The International Themed Entertainment Association awarded a THEA to the Archway Monument for Attraction of the Year 2001.
  • The National Parks Service certified the Archway for its preservation of the Oregon, Mormon and California Trails and the Pony Express.
  • The American Bus Association chose Cranefest 2003 as one of the top 100 festivals in the United States.
  • Cranefest 2003 was also chosen as Nebraska’s Outstanding Event for 2003 by Nebraska’s Travel and Tourism Department.
  • The Archway Monument is prominently featured in the Jack Nicholson movie "About Schmidt" which opened in December 2003.
